Q: You previously recommended a termite company for an inspection. We did, he did and now the decision. He has recommended using orange oil on exposed wood in the garage. We also discussed spraying the attic (where there is evidence of drywood termites) with Bora-Care and applying it in the wall where termites have been previously active. Bora-Care is deemed substandard by California's "termite board"; probably the board members have their money interests at heart. Would you share any pros and cons you may have in mind?

A: You are right. It is about the interests of people in the industry that fumigate; that is their first consideration in deeming Bora-Care substandard. This agency (California Structural Pest Control Board) is similar to other California agencies that prefer to use hazardous materials rather than methods that are considered safe, even if the safer products are effective, and they usually are. Bora-Care is a sodium borate, which is very effective against wood-destroying insects, including various beetles, drywood termites and even carpenter bees. The only thing substandard is the attitude of the "termite board" and similar agencies. Keep in mind that fumigation is very expensive and very profitable for the company doing the work - more so if wood-boring beetles are involved, as you have to use much more Vikane, thereby increasing your cost and their profit.

I would definitely recommend you use the Bora-Care where recommended and orange oil for drywood termites, and don't pay attention to these agencies that have their own agenda. Sodium borates are very effective when used properly, and I can recommend companies that do just that. Fumigation should be used only as a last resort, if the building is severely infested.
